PhaNuSpo Short-term Finishing Contract

With the PhaNuSpo Short-term Finishing Contract, the Vienna Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences supports doctoral candidates in the final phase of their doctoral studies.

Extension by 3-months of your present contract position as University Assistant (praedoc) are offered to student members of the VDS PhaNuSpo.

Job grading in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Extent of employment: 30 hours/week

 

General conditions and requirements

  1. The applicant and his/her supervisor(s) at the University of Vienna are members of the VDS PhaNuSpo.
  2. The applicant can only be funded once during the final phase of his/her doctoral study, either through the "PhaNuSpo Completion Scholarship" or the "PhaNuSpo Short-term Finishing Contract".
  3. The applicant is employed as a Praedoc or has been employed as a Praedoc in the current calendar year. The candidate is (still) employed by the University of Vienna and is subject to all associated rights and obligations.  In addition, the general conditions must be observed, i.e. a transfer is only possible if all conditions for further employment are met (e.g. chain contract regulation, requirements under alens law, etc.). 
  4. The applicant needs to complete and submit his/her doctoral thesis within the funding period. Therefore, at the time of the application, work on the dissertation must have progressed to such an extent that the dissertation can be expected to be submitted by the end of the funding period at the latest. Therefore, please clearly indicate in your application the current status of your doctoral thesis and your time and work schedule until its submission.
  5. The applicant has passed the public presentation within 12 months after the start of the doctoral studies, set up the doctoral thesis agreement and, since then, submitted annually the progress reports (dates see in transcript of records/ Sammelzeugnis).
  6. The applicant has an excellent record of doctoral studies (lenght of study, grades) and provides evidence of relevant academic achievements (publications, conference presentations, etc.) during his/her doctoral studies.
  7. PhaNuSpo's commitment to equal opportunities will take into account any breaks or delays in the applicant's progress through his/her doctoral studies, e.g. due to parental leave, long-term chronic illness or caring responsibilities.
  8. The applicant must not necessarily be present at the University of Vienna (laboratory, etc.) in order to complete the dissertation.
  9. Please note that consumables required for experiments or empirical studies are not covered by this Short-term Finishing Contract.

 

Application

All documents, except the dissertation, must be written in English.

Only complete applications that meet all formal criteria will be considered for assessment. It is not possible to make amendments once the application has been submitted.

Applications must be submitted via the online online aplication form on 31 October 2023 the latest.

Required documents

  1. Completed online application form. Note: The application form is only available during the announced application periods. The 2024 call will be scheduled as soon as possible.
  2. Report on status of the doctoral thesis: You must use the template, no more than 3 pages, 11 pt font size, single-spaced.

This report must be composed of

  • An abstract with a maximum of 1,500 characters including spaces.
  • A summary stating the aim/hypothesis, chosen methods, already accomplished highlights of the doctoral thesis work and the scientific output, and preliminary conclusions (no more than one page, including the list of the key references).
  • Cumulative thesis: A tabular overview of the peer-reviewed publications including information about the publication status (no more than one page), OR
  • Monograph: A tabular overview of the table of content including information on the completion status (no more than one page)
  • A detailed work schedule for the completion of the thesis with a convincing explanation that the doctoral thesis can be completed within the duration of the short-term finishing contract (no more than one page).
  1. Curriculum vitae in tabular form, including a list of publications (divided into thesis and non-thesis publications, DOI address or other persistent identifier to be provided) and conference presentations. Please explain any gaps in your CV or longer periods of your doctoral study (no more than three pages, in PDF format).
  2. Doctoral thesis agreement: A copy of the approved doctoral thesis agreement (in PDF format).
  3. Annual progress reports: Copies of all approved annual progress reports (in one single PDF file).
  4. Transcript of records / “Sammelzeugnis” (in PDF format).
  5. Positive statement(s) from your supervisor(s): Following the submission of the application, your supervisor(s) at the VDS PhaNuSpo will be asked for a statement on the progress of your thesis by 15 November 2023. Please note that your application is not complete and will not be considered without a statement from at least one of your supervisors at the VDS PhaNuSpo.

Selection process

The PhaNuSpo Short-term Finishing Contract will be awarded competitively on the basis of the submitted documents and within the limits of this funding programme. Only applications that meet all the required formal criteria will be assessed. The candidates are selected by a jury consisting of experts from the disciplines in our doctoral school. The jury will discuss and compare the applications and decide which projects will be funded. For each of the main funding criteria, points 0-3 will be awarded:

  • The current status of the doctoral thesis project and the timeline for completion: Has the applicant convincingly demonstrated that the thesis can be completed within the funding period?
  • Statement of the supervisor at the VDS PhaNuSpo: Does the supervisor fully support the application?
  • Academic achievements and study progress: Has the applicant achieved comprehensive academic results? Has the applicant already completed almost all or all of the ECTS credits required?
  • PhaNuSpo’s commitment to equal opportunities will take into account any breaks or delays in the applicant’s progress through his/her studies (e.g. due to parental leave, long-term or chronic illness or caring responsibilities).
  • All applicants will be informed of the jury’s decision after the jury meeting.

If your application is rejected, you may reapply for the PhaNuSpo Completion Grant again at a later date. If you resubmit an application, it must include a statement on the progress of the doctoral thesis since the last application and an explanation of why the scholarship is still needed.

Applicants do not have recourse to legal action.
